Clock Tower Cup

The Betfair Clock Tower Cup at Doncaster Racecourse will be one of the highlights of the 2017 Racing Staff Week. This will be the third running of this charity race, in which trainers nominate members of their staff to ride.

The Clock Tower Cup will be run over a straight seven furlongs on the turf.

  Jessie O’Kane Trainer: Paul Midgley
County: Yorkshire

Jessie has worked in racing for two years and had never sat on a horse before she went to do the Foundation Course at the Northern Racing College. Jessie got her interest in racing from her cousin, flat jockey David Allan and one day would like to be a professional jockey too. She says she loves working with racehorses and coming into the racing industry is the best thing she has ever done.

  Julie Kelshaw Trainer: Patrick Holmes
County: Yorkshire

I only started riding racehorses in 2015 and rode in the 2016 MacMillan Charity Race at York.  During my training for the charity race I started as a work rider for Patrick Holmes and still continue in this role.  I applied to take part in the Clock Tower Cup to raise money for Racing Welfare as the charity provides great support and practical help to the staff.

  Poppy Fielding Trainer: Tom Dascombe
County: Cheshire

Poppy had horses at home as a child and participated in all aspects of equestrian competition including showjumping, mounted games and Eventing. A member of the Chipping Pony Club, she rode in pony races in her early teens had rode a winner at Haydock!  She attended the British Racing School in 2015 and joined Manor House Stables in Cheshire straight from there. Poppy said that she wishes to ride in the Clock Tower Cup and raise funds for the charity to support people working in the racing industry who need their help.

  Samantha Pugh Trainer: Tim Easterby
County: Yorkshire

Samantha rode for a local riding club since she was 11 and represented them at area levels. She’s always wanted to be a jockey and at 16 joined Tim Easterby’s yard.  From there she did the Foundation course at the British Racing School and later completed her NVQ Level 2 and did a work riding course.  She did the amateur licence course in December 2016 and is thrilled to have her first ride for her boss in this race.  She especially wanted to ride in the Clock Tower Cup and support Racing Welfare as the work that the charity does around dementia and the prevention of social isolation and loneliness is very close to her heart.  Her granddad passed away recently and had dementia; he was her biggest support and his greatest wish was to see her on the race track.

Amy Lawrence Trainer: Marjorie Fife
County: Yorkshire

Amy has worked with horses all her life in show jumping and eventing all over world.  At 16 she joined Murial Naughton which is where her love of racing started. Amy is now Head Girl at Marjorie Fifes where the team work extremely hard to get the best out of each horse.  She is being given the chance to live her dream of riding in a race in the Clock Tower Cup. Amy says ‘Racing Welfare is a fantastic charity without which stable staff would be at a major loss and I’d like to give a little back whilst also ticking one off my bucket list. I’d like to thank everyone for their support especially Marjorie Will and Tom and to Racing Welfare for this amazing opportunity.’

  Jenny Walker Trainer: Scott Dixon
County: Nottinghamshire

Jenny enjoyed her time working for the late Dandy Nicholls who rode a winner on the 12 year old Lucayan Dancer as an amateur. She then went on to be assistant trainer for Garry Moss (her partner) having an excellent 2016 season from a small string of horses before joining Scott Dixon. Racing welfare recently helped Jenny through a difficult time and she says that when she was asked to ride at Doncaster she felt it was a chance to repay the kindness and support provided by them.

  Rhianon Horne Trainer: Daniel Loughnane
County: Worcestershire

I have been working in the racing industry for 4 1/2 years now. I am looking to apply for my amateurs licence and the opportunity to ride in this charity race is a great stepping stone for me to get there. It will give me a feel for riding on the track and experience of riding in a race – it is also helping me to work on my fitness and made me realise how much work I have to put in if I want to be a jockey! I am very excited about the ride and looking forward to riding at Doncaster.

  Elise Kemp Trainer: Karl Burke

I started out at the Northern Racing College in 2013 from there I went to Jedd O’Keeffe (Middleham). I was at Jedds for 3 years and loved every minute, I felt I was ready for a change so moved to Karl Burkes in December 2016. I would like to ride in the Clock Tower Cup to give something back to the charity for all the help they give to people in racing.
